Juan Pablo Montoya Signed 1999 Marlboro 500 Race Used Gloves

1999 Marlboro 500

Description

Motorsport Gold is privileged to offer these historic signed race worn gloves, used by the legendary Colombian racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya at the Marlboro 500, the season finale of the 1999 FedEx CART Championship.

They are a remarkable piece of Motorsport Gold as Juan Pablo clinched the CART championship at this event, held at Fontana in California, finishing 4th for Target Chip Ganassi Racing. This result was good enough to seal the championship in his favour over title rival Dario Franchitti but it was astonishingly close as they ended up level on points with Juan winning the series on a tie-break having recorded more victories during the season. Sadly, Juan’s post-race celebrations were muted as the 1999 Marlboro 500 is tragically also remembered as the race in which the popular Canadian driver Greg Moore lost his life after crashing on the 9th lap.

As the incumbent test driver for the Williams F1 team and fresh from winning the 1998 FIA Formula 3000 International Championship, Montoya had joined Ganassi as replacement for double CART Champion Alex Zanardi and 1999 marked his first full season of open wheel racing in North America. Despite his lack of experience, Montoya thrilled fans with his exceptional car control and racecraft during the season and he became the first rookie series champion since Nigel Mansell in 1993, claiming 7 wins and 7 pole positions.

These special race used gloves carry the logo of Target Chip Ganassi Racing and have been signed by Juan Pablo. To make them even more special, they are accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity from the Target Chip Ganassi Racing team.
